Why Is Wheel Alignment & Balancing Necessary?

Hey Readers

Now you must be aware of the term Wheel Alignment and Balancing or must have seen various shops doing wheel alignment and might have wondered why is it so necessary. You see balance is the key to everything be it personal life, professional life or your beloved car.
Wheel Alignment & Balancing is necessary for your car to protect it from disorientation, shaking, vibrations at high speeds, and reduced mileage.
But due to uneven and continuous wear, your tires are likely to go out of balance every few months. In such a situation it is crucial to balance them out. And the best way to do that is by using Tyre weights. But before you get them fixed, read on to know why they are so important.

Need of Wheel Balancing

  • Tyres are the most used part of your car and they are in constant touch with the road along with experiencing rough breaking and fast acceleration.
  • However, as your wheel rotates, centrifugal forces act on the centre of your vehicle’s axel which can only be contained when your wheels are perfectly balanced. But even with advanced manufacturing methods, weight imbalances cannot be avoided.
  • As you drive more and more, the weight imbalances causing bouncing, shaking etc. which affects the overall handling of the car. An imbalanced vehicle is also a threat from a safety perspective as the car loses a stable base through which it can act/react to the forces

Why are Wheel Weights Necessary?

You must have seen a silverish thing attached to the rim of your car or has been sticked inside the alloy, it is known as a wheel weight which is made up of polymer-coated zinc and steel. These are used to balance the wheel and tyre assembly. Using wheel weights will help the vehicle in distributing the weight equally on the tyres to preserve the mileage, ensure a good tyre life and most importantly it ensure a comfortable and safe ride.

Types of Tyre Weights

The main aim of using tyre weights is to maintain the balance of the vehicle and this can be achieved using two kinds of tyre weights.

  • Clip-on Weights
  • Adhesive Weights

Clip-On Weights

As the name suggests these kinds of weights are used by clipping them on any part of the rim. It can be installed both outside or inside of your car’s rim. And once installed perfectly it adds the necessary weight to the tyre so that your car does not vibrate at high speeds.

Advantages of CLIP-ON Weights

  • Easy to install/remove
  • Few Weights are required to balance
    3.No interference with wheels

Disadvantages of Clip-On Weights

  • Can Damage the rims
  • Visible when installed
  • Expensive as compared to adhesive weights

Adhesive Weights

These weights are different from clip-on ones as it gets stuck to the inside of the rim/alloy. These weights are way easy to attach and detach as compared to clip-on weights. Once attached to a particular location, adhesive wheel weights largely contribute to balancing out your tyre.

Advantages of Adhesive Weights

  • Compact
  • Cheaper
  • No damage done when installed and removed

The disadvantage of Adhesive Weights

  • Tedious Process of installation
  • Proper cleaning needs to be done before installation
  • Can wear off due to dust and high-pressure wash.

Conclusion

Wheel Balancing is the topmost thing to take care of and it needs to do after every 5000 km and also it requires proper knowledge and precision to do the job. When done properly a balanced wheel can resolve issues of decreased mileage, wobbling and steering vibrations.
